The Saskatoon Zoo Society is looking for 2 summer interpreters to work as educators during June and as a camp counsellor for July and August. Position starts May 21st, 2024 and ends August 29th, 2024. An optional break week is available from August 3-11 if desired. No other holiday time will be given during this short summer work schedule.

About You:

.Post-secondary studies or work experience related to education, biology or animal sciences, recreation and youth programming, or early childhood development. Students in the College of Education or taking the ECE certificate/diploma program are encouraged to apply.

. Engaging and informed to lead our education programs.

· Experience in a summer camp setting or other experience working with children ages 7-12

· Have an engaging and friendly personality.

· Be energetic and have the stamina to be an active, positive, camp leader for fully programmed week.

· Enjoy working with children.

· Must be comfortable working with animals (snakes, reptiles, small mammals).

Requirements:

o Provide (upon offer of employment) an acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sectors Search

o Availability for all summer camp dates (Monday to Friday: 7 hours a day in May to July 5th; 8 hours a day July 8-August 29th. All hours are during the daytime). All weekends and statutory holidays are yours to enjoy.

o First Aid certification is an asset.

What You’ll Do:

· Research, plan, and deliver creative, interactive, age-appropriate learning experiences suitable for a week-long camp program (such as including stories, crafts, games and activities)

. Lead education programs during June

· Always ensure the safety and appropriate supervision of all camp participants

· Appropriately handle socialized animal ambassadors according to procedures and as trained (such as python, ferrets, bearded dragons, blue-tongued skink). Safely return animals to their enclosures and equipment to its place after programming.

· Act as a responsible role model for youth and ambassador for the Saskatoon Zoo Society.

· Provide leadership and guidance for camp activities and responsible care for camp participants.

· Lead or instructs with enthusiasm and passion to inspire discovery and learning in others

· Able to appropriately manage groups of children and respond to individual participant behaviors/needs as required.

· Be a good listener – monitor campers’ moods and interactions. Work with other staff to ensure that all participants are having a good experience.

· Problem solve and exercise good judgment.

· Maintain a safe, clean working environment for campers, animals, visitors, and staff
