EdZOOcation FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the meeting location?

The meeting location is ALWAYS at the RED BENCHES at the front of the Zoo adjacent to the parking lot. The Zoo can have over 2,000 visitors and spans 50 acres – we can’t find you if you are not at the benches.

Why do we have to walk back to the red benches for a program when we are already in the Zoo?

The doors to the Learning Centre are always locked for security reasons. Due to limited staff and a hectic schedule we must rely on you to guide your class back to the red benches to either start your program or do a mid-program swap (if needed)

What if I can’t find my educator?

Please keep the office number handy: 306-975-3395 . If no one answers, visit the Admissions Window—staff there can reach us directly.

What if I need to adjust my times due to travel restrictions?

We can make adjustments within our blocks.

● Morning blocks are 10:00am-12:00pm

● Afternoon blocks are 12:30pm-2:30pm

E-mail the office directly at info@saskatoonzoosociety.ca for adjustments

Does each teacher need to book their own program?

Yes. Just like you, we can only teach one class at a time. Our classrooms cannot safely hold more than one group, and sessions with animal ambassadors are limited to 15 students at a time. These limits are in place to ensure student safety, animal welfare, and compliance with fire and emergency regulations.

Who is allowed in the education program?

 ● Students enrolled in your class

● 1 teacher

● 1-2 EA’s

● 4 parent helpers

(max 15 students and 4 adults per animal room)

What if I can’t find 4 parent helpers?

You do not need 4 parent helpers to attend. At least 2 adults are required so when your class is split in half each group has an adult supervisor with them.

What if a parent helper brings along a sibling?

They are welcome to pay admission and tour the Zoo. Siblings of students are not permitted to attend programming . Just as you teach only your own enrolled students, our programs are designed exclusively for the students registered in your class.

What if more than 4 parents wish to come on the field trip?

Additional adults are always welcome at the Zoo with paid admission and may join outdoor activities. Classroom programs are limited to the stated numbers.

Exception: Special needs that require extra assistance, please email info@saskatoonzoosociety.ca for special accommodations.

How can I make the visit smoother for my chaperones?

With up to 2,000 visitors exploring 50 acres each day, it’s easy to get separated. We recommend sharing your phone number with chaperones so everyone can reconnect quickly. (Please note: unless you’re part of a booked education program, education staff aren’t able to help connect chaperones with their groups.)

What if I have a student with a mobility aid?

No problem! Please let us know in advance so we can set up the classroom to accommodate them comfortably.

What if I have a student with a medical condition?

If you have a student with a condition that could affect participation, please let us know privately so we can be prepared (e.g., epilepsy, seizures)

Why do you have to split my class?

We split to alleviate any stress on our animals. Small groups=big experiences. In other words, more time with each animal and less wait time in-between!

Why do programs change after the May long weekend until the end of June?

The demand for programming is at its peak during this time. Programs are adjusted to accommodate as many schools and students as possible.

Can I share a program with another class and share the cost?

IF you are a tiny school with only a few students per grade, please email info@saskatoonzoosociety.ca

What should/can the students bring/wear?

● Water bottles

● Closed-toed shoes

● Clothing appropriate for the weather

● NO heavy scents – please warn parent helpers ahead of time. Visitors with heavy scents may not attend indoor programming due to staff fragrance allergies.

How long can I stay?

You can stay at the Zoo as long as you like within Zoo hours! The Zoo Society works with your class during your booked time as per the education schedule. If you wish to arrive early or leave late and do your own self-guided activities, you are welcome to do so.

What else is there to do at the Zoo?

● The Kinsmen Express II Train starts running June 1st. Expect long lines, especially in June.

● Orano playground inside the Zoo

● McDonald’s playground outside the Zoo in the park

● Butterfly House visit – Youth must have an adult supervisor. Limited entry may cause lineups.

● Self-guided activities are available on our website here: https://saskatoonzoosociety.ca/education/self-guided/

What are the options for lunch?

● Bring your own lunches and picnic wherever there is green space

● Plan for a hotdog roast in the park (firewood available on-site; first-come, first-served sites)

● Order school lunches from the Cafe by emailing buckeyecafe@saskatoonzoosociety.ca or calling 306-649-8001

Why should I fill out program feedback?

Your feedback ensures we continue to provide high-quality education. Part of our feedback process is thanking our funders, which is very important. If you are participating in a sponsored program, please take 5 minutes to write a thank-you note. This acknowledges the funder’s contribution, shows they are valued, demonstrates that their support is making an impact, and helps us secure funding for future years.

What else is helpful to know?

● Food and drinks are not permitted in animal classrooms. Please store them in backpacks in the hallway (or where designated) during your session.

● Students must remain with their teachers or chaperones at all times. Unsupervised groups are not allowed to roam the Zoo.

● If a student throws anything into an animal enclosure, alert Zoo staff immediately. Objects and food not intended for animals can cause serious harm.

● Please remember the Zoo is primarily an outdoor facility, with very limited to no indoor space in case of poor weather.

Why are there so many rules?

As an accredited facility, we follow strict animal care standards as well as fire and emergency regulations. With over 500 programs and 12,000 students each year—and only three full-time staff—our education blocks are carefully scheduled to ensure both compliance and that our staff receive necessary breaks. Thank you for your understanding and support.
