Birthday Program Interpreter (P/T)

We’re seeking someone to coordinate our “Birthday At The Zoo” programming and other prepared classroom and public environmental education programming at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo.

About you:

· Post-secondary studies related to education, biology or animal sciences, recreation and youth programming, or early childhood development. Education students are encouraged to apply!

· Academic, work, volunteer experience directly engaging elementary or middle-school children with animals and environmental/nature topics is an asset.

· Have an engaging and friendly personality.

· Must be comfortable handling and working with animals (snakes, lizards/amphibians, small mammals).

· Be energetic and enjoy working with children and families.

· Be organized – able to prepare supplies and materials for concurrent events and activities.

Requirements:

o Provide an acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sectors Search

o Fluent in English – able to speak in public, and speak clearly.

o All program coordination requires a degree of physical ability and range of movement.

o Standard First Aid with CPR C certification (training will be provided for those without certification)

What you’ll do:

· Coordinate “Birthday at the Zoo” programming.

  • Prepare the room and gather supplies, activities, and animal ambassadors for programs.
  • Greet families and welcome them to facility.
  • Present birthday party program including animal themed games and activities, and coordinate meet-and-greet with live animal ambassadors.
  • Oversee the room rental for remainder of non-program time (families eat cake, open presents, etc.)
  • Put away supplies and animal ambassadors. Clean and rearrange room for next booking.


· Present other engaging education programs ensuring accuracy of information and the maintenance of the conservation message. Programs include classroom education for K-8 students (virtual and onsite), pond-dipping (outdoor, experiential), bio-fact presentations, as well as the possibility of special group programs on evenings/weekends.

· Use time management and organization to deliver programming within established timeframes. Be flexible to adjust if necessary (to extend/add to fill time or shorten depending on situation).

· Utilize diverse animals, biofacts, and educational tools to deliver programming that engages multiple learning styles

· Lead or instructs with enthusiasm and passion to inspire discovery and learning in others

· Act as a responsible role model for youth and ambassador for the Saskatoon Zoo Society.

· Able to manage student groups and appropriately respond to individual participant behaviors/needs as required.

· Appropriately handle socialized animal ambassadors according to procedures and as trained (such as python, ferrets, bearded dragons, blue-tongued skink).

This position is part-time, casual beginning as early as June 9, 2022. Hours will be based on number of birthdays and other programs booked. Hours will be primarily Saturday and Sunday (10:00 – 6:00 pm), with the possibility of some evening programming on weekdays (4:00 – 7:00 pm).

There is an opportunity for this role to expand to cover educational programming needs (evening community programming, weekday classroom programming) in addition to birthdays.

Salary: $16.00 per hour
