Program Coordinator – Pond-Dipping
This position will coordinate pond-dipping public environmental education programming for students and guests to learn about invertebrates and amphibians in the pond at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo.
This position will be scheduled 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, Wednesday to Sunday, starting June 27 and ending August 26.
About you:
· Education, work, or volunteer experience directly engaging elementary or middle-school children or related to outdoors, animals, water/fishing, and environmental/nature topics
· Have an engaging and friendly personality. Must be an individual that enjoys working with children and families.
· Must be comfortable touching plants, small invertebrates, or amphibians in pond water.
Requirements:
o Provide an acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sectors Search
o All Saskatoon Zoo Society program coordination requires a degree of physical ability and range of movement. Pond-dipping will, at times, requires coordinator to (a) get down on belly on dock to scoop water, (b) carry equipment down a gravel (sometimes muddy) path, and (c) transport equipment back and forth across the expansive zoo site several times per day.
o This is an outdoor program – must be comfortable working outside. Coordinator will be outdoors most of their day and may work in heat, wind, rainy weather.
o Fluent in English
o First Aid, Open Water Safety, pool safety or lifeguard training is an asset.
What you’ll do:
· Design and create a pond-based public interpretation station with information and activities to facilitate learning related to invertebrates, amphibians, healthy water bodies, and our pond-dipping program outcomes.
· Present engaging education programs ensuring accuracy of information and the maintenance of the conservation message
· Use time management and organization to deliver programming within established timeframes. Be flexible to adjust if necessary (to extend/add to fill time or shorten depending on situation).
· Utilize diverse animals, biofacts, and educational tools to deliver programming that engages multiple learning styles. Leads or instructs with enthusiasm and passion to inspire discovery and learning in others
· Ensure safety around open water.
